"New Moon" Takes Center Stage, Should Post Big Opening Weekend

As only the eighth release of the year to be distributed to 4,000 or more theaters, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" should be able to ride its wave of popularity into one of the biggest opening weekends of the year. Drama "The Blind Side" also gets a strong release at more than 3,000 theaters as does animated "Planet 51," although both will likely get overshadowed by the phenomenon of "The Twilight Saga."

"2012" Hits Big With Audiences, Hauls In Estimated $65 Million

An average of more than $19,000 per venue pushed "2012" to the highest box office total since mid-July, while "A Christmas Carol" fared well in its second weekend in theaters. Other new wide release "Pirate Radio" (882 venues) didn't reach its intended demographic, however, as it struggled in its first weekend and failed to land in the top ten. Meanwhile, at less than 200 theaters, drama "Precious" brought in $6.09 million over the weekend and continues to be a significant draw.

Disaster Epic "2012" Set To Top Weekend Box Office
11/13/2009 12:09 PM
ET
Opening at 3,404 theaters this weekend, director Roland Emmerich's latest big budget action release "2012" will easily be the number one overall draw. In a more limited release, comedy "Pirate Radio" gets launched at just under 900 theaters and should be able to pull in enough to land in the top five. Though "Precious" will make it to only 174 theaters this weekend, its prodigious numbers from last weekend suggest that it will easily be enough to post a strong weekend and land in the top ten.

Carrying a $200 million production budget, animated "A Christmas Carol" got off to a mediocre start over the weekend, bringing in just $31 million, according to early studio estimates. "Michael Jackson's This Is It" posted strong second weekend figures with an estimated $14 million intake, pushing its domestic total over $57 million in just 12 days in theaters. Also doing fairly well was new release "The Men Who Stare At Goats," which outdrew thrillers "The Fourth Kind" and "The Box."

Holiday Season Kicks Off With Release Of "A Christmas Carol"
11/6/2009 11:17 AM
ET
Far and away the widest release of the weekend, Disney's "A Christmas Carol" will hit more than 3,600 theaters and should easily be the number one overall draw amongst a fairly eclectic group of releases. Horror/thriller "The Box" should also command a fairly decent audience share along with thriller "The Fourth Kind," though there will be some overlap, as both releases are PG-13. R-rated comedy "The Men Who Stare At Goats" is the fourth wide release of the weekend.
