Chubby Checker appeared on the "Ed Sullivan Show" on October 22, 1961, promoting his hit single "The Twist."

The song had actually come and gone from the top of the Billboard charts at that point, spending a week in the number one spot in the fall of 1960.

"The Twist," both the song and the dance, had caught on with teenagers for a while. But by 1961, most kids had moved on to other fads.

However, while teenagers had gotten over the Twist craze, it had become a trend with adults. Hence, Checker's appearance on Sullivan in October came on an episode that also included comedy team Wayne and Shuster and several scenes from the 1960 Broadway musical "Do-Ra-Mi," starring Phil Silvers, TV's Sgt. Bilko.

"The Twist" would be re-released and would return to the top of the charts for a 2-week run in January, 1962.
