Companies ramped up productivity in the second quarter. US mortgage applications reversed course last week, falling amid a drop in demand for both new purchase and refinance loans. Walt Disney Co. said earnings for its latest quarter rose 24 percent from last year. And sales at McDonald's were unexpectedly flat in July.
