(RTTNews) -
Barack Obama accepted the presidential nomination of the Democratic Party on Thursday night, again stressing his message of hope, change, and unity. He also attacked his Republican rival, John McCain, who Obama says would continue the policies of President George W. Bush.
"With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States," Obama said to thunderous applause, capping the 4-day Democratic National Convention and making history as the first African American to represent a major party in the chase for the nation's highest office. He accepted the nomination of the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King's iconic "I Have A Dream" speech.
In his address, Obama emphasized his long-standing theme of change, repeating the phrase "now is the time" as he listed the goals he would set for his presidency
"Now is the time to end this addiction [to oil], and to understand that drilling is a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution…Now is the time to finally meet our moral obligation to provide every child a world-class education, because it will take nothing less to compete in the global economy…Now is the time to finally keep the promise of affordable, accessible health care for every single American," he said.
Obama also criticized the Bush administration and attacked John McCain for espousing policies that would continue those of the current president.
"John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time," Obama said. "Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush has been right more than ninety percent of the time? I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change."
The Illinois thanked Hillary Rodham Clinton, his former rival for the Democratic nomination, whom he called "a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours." He also thanked her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
