Rodney Atkins and his wife Rose Falcon celebrated his birthday with a live streamed show at Stageit.com. Proceeds from the show went to the Holston United Methodist Home for Children where Atkins lived before he was adopted. Rodney and Rose donated several items for auction including handwritten and autographed lyrics and artwork.
JoJo joined her Atlantic Record label mate B.o.B. for an acoustic performance of "John Doe," a cut from the latter's latest album Underground Luxury. Bobby Ray played guitar on the cut while Jo filled in for Priscilla Renea on vocals before an intimate crowd. According to Stupid Dope, the muted rendition brings new life to the song.
The impressive global reach of Taylor Swift has prompted one New York Times columnist to compare Swift to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In a recent column, writer Nicholas Kristof reflects on a recent trip to Ukraine where he saw Swift's impact on teen culture: "The kids here learn English and flirt in low-cut blue jeans," he writes.
Lorde has been announced as one of the headliners for the upcoming Boston Calling fest, which goes down at the city's City Hall Plaza from September 5 to 8. The remaining four headlining acts are the National, the Replacements, Nas with the Roots and Neutral Milk Hotel. Typically, the event features only three headliners.
Bruce Springsteen released the four song EP American Beauty on Record Store Day on vinyl only. The album is now available for digital download from iTunes and Amazon. Three of the tunes - "American Beauty," "Mary Mary" and "Hey Blue Eyes" - were recorded during the High Hopes sessions, while a fourth track, "Hurry Up Sundown," comes from an unknown session.
Former Smiths fronter and animal rights activist Morrissey has lashed out at Canadian authorities - in particular the Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, whom he accused of complicity in the slaughter of seals. Writing on the Moz zine, True to You, Morrissey said that he blames the regressive policies of the Canadian government.
A demo from the band Molimo, featuring former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, has been found in a collection of old vinyl in a barn in upstate New York. Molimo recorded a demo for RCA in 1971, but had it shelved. Two years later Ace would hook up with KISS. The disc was discovered by record collector Chris Reisman, who had to dig through thousands of LPs.
Kellie Pickler is set to feature on an upcoming episode of ABC's Nashville scheduled to air May 7. The episode, titled "All or Nothing With Me," will also feature a guest spot from first lady Michelle Obama. The pair play themselves, showing up at a charity concert at Fort Campbell organized by the show's character Luke Wheeler (Will Chase).
Damon Albarn has opened up about his comments to Q magazine on his history of heroin use. The Blur singer admitted to using the drug while spending time in Africa and has now clarified the statement to underscore that he does not condone heroin use.
Neil Young has quietly released a new covers album A Letter Home exclusively on vinyl. Karrueche Chan, Bow Wow and Tank showed up to a Washington, D.C. court room late last week to show support for Chris Brown, whose trial began late last week. Breezy's mom, Joyce Hawkins, was also in attendance. Judge Patricia Wynn was expected to deliver a verdict on Friday, but delayed the decision until Monday, when the trial begins in earnest.
Wes Scantlin, fronter for Puddle of Mudd, displayed strange behavior while on stage at a Dallas club late last week. According to TMZ, the singer threw his mic into the audience and then began to insult some concert goers. There was also an exchange of beer throwing, although it is unclear who started it.
Foreigner founder Mick Jones says that the material he and co-founder/vocalist Lou Gramm have been working on may be ready for release next year. The pair have been in contact after getting inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last year. Jones tells Classic Rock magazine that Gramm uncovered some previously unreleased tracks.
Darius Rucker sat down with Dan Rather to talk on the latter's AXS TV show, The Big Interview. The pair discussed a range of issues including Rucker's transition from a pop to country star and the state of country music today. "It was about the music. I wanted to be country. I wanted to play country music," Rucker told Rather of his decision to begin recording country music.
Coldplay has released a remix of their single "Midnight" by Giorgio Moroder. "Midnight" was the first music to drop from the band's upcoming album, Ghost Stories, and now the remix is streaming freely via Soundcloud. According to Idolator, Moroder adds his own touch to the song: "Moroder lays a hypnotic click-click-click disco beat below . . ."
