Lipps Inc. reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their signature hit “Funky Town” on May 31, 1980. The track was originally released as part of Lipps Inc.’s 1979 EP “Mouth to Mouth,” which also reached the top of the Billboard Pop chart in 1980. The track was written by the band’s founder Steve Greenberg, who had been charged with writing an album’s worth of material for Casablanca Records. A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Greenberg enlisted a collection of local musicians to record on the track. One such artist was former Miss Black Minnesota, Cynthia Johnson, who provided the song’s iconic vocal track. When “Funky Town” hit the top of the charts on May 31, it took over from Blondie’s hit single “Call Me.” The track held on at number one for four weeks before it was succeeded by Paul McCartney’s solo hit “Coming Up.”
