In 2013, nearly 110 million credit and debit card accounts were impacted in a credit card breach. For each of those customers who had shopped at Target between mid-November and mid-December 2013, credit/debit card information, name, address, phone number and/or email address had been stolen. This period, starting from Black Friday, was the busiest shopping season. During this time, the company’s systems, including the point-of-sale (POS) systems, were breached multiple times, almost on a daily basis. Target personnel discovered the breach and notified the U.S. Justice Department by December 13th. As of December 15th, Target had a third-party forensic team in place and the attack mitigated. But the broad range of information stolen led to banks like Citibank announcing that they were re-issuing all debit cards that were possibly involved in the breach.
