Everyone dreams of spending some time in the space, but even in a dream, only a few get a chance to be on board the space shuttle that takes off to Mars. You may well be among the fortunate ones if you are in Florida and taking a ride at Mission: Space, at Epcot.

Built at a cost of close to $100 million, the space mission ride in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, simulates what an astronaut might experience aboard a spacecraft on a mission to Mars, from the higher g-force of liftoff to the speculative hypersleep.

The attraction simulates astronaut training for the first manned mission to Mars aboard the fictional X-2 Deep Space Shuttle in 2036, right after the seventy-fifth anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to enter space.

Opened in 2003, with sponsorship from Compaq, Mission: Space had its hardware designed and built by Environmental Tectonics Corporation of Pennsylvania. After a brief closure for a refurbishment in mid 2017, the ride was reopened a couple of months later with a video simulating a flight around the earth and an upgraded Mars mission.

The rider is assigned an on-board role of a navigator, pilot, commander, or engineer and given two tasks to perform during the mission. The spacecraft's on-board self-automated pilot will perform each task if the rider does not respond to his or her prompt from Mission Control or if there is no one to perform the task.

There are exciting post-show activities, too, with some group games lined up for the guests.
