The U.S. State Department has released its new "Smart Traveler" application for U.S. travelers going abroad.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (requires iOS 4.0 or later), the Smart Traveler application provides easy access to information on the Department's travel website.
The new application helps intrepid American travelers and wary tourists abroad to get frequently updated official country information, travel alerts, travel warnings, maps, and U.S. Embassy locations.
Travelers can also set up customized e-tineraries to keep track of arrival and departure dates and make notes about upcoming trips.
Additionally, the app provides a link for travelers to enroll in the Department's free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so so they can receive Consular help in case of an emergency while in another country.
Through the new application, the State Department can better assist them by providing useful information on entry and exit requirements, and local penalties for criminal offenses such as drug possession and a customized itinerary planner. For those who have to wait long for changeover in foreign airports, the app offers information on random countries over the iPhone.
The State Department said it created this application to improve its assistance to Americans traveling abroad in times of political upheaval and natural disasters. It has made it clear that customers will have to pay the roaming charges to get up-to-the-minute warnings about the latest civil unrest or tsunami.
