A colonel in the Iraqi army and three policemen were killed in separate militant attacks by armed militants Wednesday night.
The colonel was shot dead in the Al-Kasr area of Mosul, around 400 kilometers north of Baghdad.
Two policemen were attacked while returning home after duty in Hay Aden in southern Mosul.
A bomb hidden in a police car exploded in the Masib area of the city of Halla, south of Baghdad, killing a police officer and injuring five others.
Separately, more than 50 army and police personnel were injured in attacks by militants.
Thursday, the director general of the Kirkuk Health Department escaped an attempt on his life when a bomb exploded in the path of a car in which he was traveling.
Despite a fall in violence in Iraq since last year, a number of recent blasts have raised fears that sustained violence is returning to the country, aimed at destabilizing the government before the general elections that are just three months away.
