Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, whose coalition cabinet was ousted in a no-confidence vote Wednesday, has resigned.

The media liaisons office of the government's secretariat said on Thursday that First Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchynov has been assigned the Prime Minister's duties until a new government is formed.

It was Tymoshenko's press secretary Maryna Soroka who announced the news of her resignation. She denied reports that Tymoshenko has gone on leave.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Hryhoriy Nemyria told reporters that Tymoshenko was on a short-term leave. Subsequently, deputy head of presidential administration Hanna Herman complained that Tymoshenko's vacation will cost Ukraine dear.

As per the constitution, Tymoshenko and her cabinet has to remain as care-taker government until a new cabinet replaces them. But the 49-year-old blonde leader had vowed not to continue as care-taker Prime Minister if her cabinet fails in a no-confidence vote.

243 members in the 450-seat chamber voted Wednesday in favor of a no-confidence resolution moved against the coalition cabinet by President Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions.

The outcome was a double blow for Tymoshenko, who last month lost in a bid to become the president of the country.

On the other side, the development clears the way for a new government committed to the policy programs of Yanukovych, who is trying to demonstrate that he will balance relations with Moscow and the West and his commitment to developing relations with Europe..

The country's political factions will have to form a coalition within 30 days and form an alternative government before 60 days.

Reports say Ukraine's political parties are most likely to group around Yanukovych's Party of Regions. However, if the president is convinced that the government formation chances are less, he will disband parliament and call snap elections.
