President Obama called Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Tuesday to congratulate the Iraqi people on the success of the Arab Summit hosted in Baghdad last week, the White House said.
The White House said Obama also praised Iraq's continued reintegration into the region as a sovereign, independent state.
The two leaders also discussed efforts to advance peace and security in the region as well as the political situation in Iraq.
Obama told al-Maliki the U.S. remains committed to a unified, democratic Iraq and indicated his support for the prime minister's participation in the ongoing dialogue convened by President Talabani tasked with reconciling Iraqi political blocs in a flexible and open manner, the White House said.
