President Barack Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney Sunday offered their prayers and condolences in the wake of a fatal shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
Although some details are still unclear, police believe a gunman entered the temple, which is in a suburb of Milwaukee, and went on a rampage that killed six and wounded several others.
A police officer who was among the first to arrive shot and killed the gunman, but another officer was ambushed by the gunman while attempting to aid one of the victims and left severely wounded, although he is expected to survive, reports say.
In written statements both Obama and Romney expressed their shock and sadness on learning of the tragedy.
Obama offered condolences from both himself and First Lady Michelle Obama as well as the broader public.
"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin," Obama said.
He added, "At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded."
Obama pledged whatever support would be necessary from federal officials as the investigation into the shooting moves forward. Law enforcement officials are reportedly investigating whether the act might have been intended as an act of domestic terrorism.
"As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family," Obama said.
Romney also offered thoughts and prayers on his behalf and on behalf of his wife Anne in a written statement.
"This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship," Romney said. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community."
He added, "We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."
