The Olympic closing ceremony drew in a whopping 26.3 million viewers on Sunday night, with an average of over 23 million viewers between 9 pm on Sunday and the early morning on Monday. The high numbers surpassed those of the opening ceremony, which was produced by Danny Boyle and earned widespread critical acclaim.
The closing ceremony took 82.5 percent of the total television viewership share between 9 pm and 1 am, reports the U.K.'s Guardian. And while the closing ceremonies took in higher average and total viewership, the opening ceremony held higher peak viewership numbers with 26.9 million spectators tuning in for a period of about five minutes.
The Guardian also reports that the final day of Olympic coverage on the home nation's BBC1 also dominated the charts taking a 51.9 percent share between 6 am on Sunday and 2 am on Monday.
