Origin Agritech Ltd. (SEED) announced on Saturday that it received the Bio-safety Certificate from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture as a final approval for commercial approval of the world's first genetically modified phytase corn. Origin Agritech gapped open higher Monday and rose steadily until mid-morning. The stock rose further in the early portion of the afternoon and closed up by $5.24 at $10.45 on the highest volume of the year. Shares surged to a new high for the year.
