Complying with a NATO pledge to boost its forces in Afghanistan, the Slovak government has decided to deploy 57 military guards in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission this year.
This is in addition to 242 Slovak soldiers currently serving as part of ISAF in the war-torn country.
The new troops would be assigned security duty at the Kandahar airport in the dangerous southern province, Defense Ministry spokesman Vladimir Gemela said Wednesday.
The government's decision has to be ratified by Slovakia's parliament, where the ruling party holds a comfortable majority.
