Spain's labor market woes show no signs of abating, after official data showed that the country's unemployment rate continue to rise in the June quarter, albeit only slightly.
Statistical office INE on Friday said the unemployment rate edged up to 20.09% from 20.05% in the March quarter. The number of unemployed increased by 32,800 during the quarter to total 4.65 million. At the same time, the number of employed increased by 82,700.
The unemployment rate among residents was slightly lower than the headline rate at 18.2%, while that of non-residents was 30.2%. The biggest increase in unemployment was registered in the agriculture sector.
Andalusia, Valencia, the Canary Islands and Madrid recorded the highest increase in unemployed between April and June. On the other hand, unemployment fell in Murcia, Aragon and the Balearic Islands.
The Basque Country, at 10.4%, had the lowest unemployment rate of all the autonomous regions. The Canary Islands, at nearly 30%, had the highest.
