A British passenger plane with 110 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing at an airport in the Mauritanian capital on Wednesday after one of its engines caught fire.

On noticing the fire, the pilot of the Boeing 757 aircraft sought permission from the Nouakchott international airport authorities to land there.

The fire was put out by the airport's firefighters immediately on landing. The passengers were safe, reports quoting an official in Nouakchott said.

The flight, operated by a subsidiary of BMI, was heading from Freetown in Sierra Leone to London.

A replacement Airbus A321 has been dispatched to Nouakchott.
