Lower Open Expected For Japan Shares

A lower open is expected Tuesday for japan stocks. Traders saw Wall Street end its winning streak, as the Dow posted a triple-digit loss.

Tokyo stocks declined on Monday, despite a strong performance by the steel makers.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 average closed with a loss of 75.32 points or 0.81 percent at 9,226.00.

The TOPIX index of all stocks traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section declined 3.79 points or 0.45 percent to close at 834.92.

Trading volume was 1.586 billion shares.

There were 458 stocks closing higher in the First Section, 1,002 were lower and 177 finished unchanged.

Just five of the 33 industry sectors traced by the TSE finished higher.

Trading came as the Bank of Japan, as expected, left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 0.10 percent.

Among the stocks and sectors of interest, Honda Motor was down 1.4 percent and automotive audio maker Clarion Co tumbled 9.3 percent on word that Clarion would be removed from the Nikkei 225 Average.

Advantest was down 1.8 percent and sumco Corp was down 3.9 percent.

The steel makers were stronger, with Nippon Steel up 2.4 percent, Kobe Steel was up 1.6 percent, Sumitomo Metal Industries was up 1.0 percent and JFE Holdings also up 2.4 percent.

In overseas trading, U.S. stocks moved broadly lower on Tuesday in a low-volume, post-holiday session. At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 10,340.69, a loss of 107.24 points or 1.03 percent. The NASDAQ Composite index fell 24.86 points or 1.11 percent to 2.208.89 and the S & P 500 index was down 12.67 points or 1.15 percent at 1,091.84.

The other major Asia/Pacific region markets were mixed on Tuesday.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was up 46.02 points or 0.22 percent at 21,401.79.

China's Shanghai Composite index was up 2.11 points or 0.09 percent at 2,698.36.

In India, the BSE 30/SENSEX index was up 85.01 points or 0.46 percent at 18,645.06.

Indonesia's Jakarta Composite index was up 13.74 points or 0.43 percent at 3,230.89.

In South Korea, the KOSPI/Seoul Composite index was down 4.68 points or 0.26 percent at 1,787.74.

The Taiwan Weighted Index was down 6.55 points or 0.08 percent at 7,885.40.
