Spanish Industrial Output In Surprise Fall

Industrial production in Spain declined 1.6% year-on-year in July, in contrast to the 3.2% rise in the previous month, the Madrid-based National Statistics Institute said on Wednesday. Economists had forecast a 2.8% increase.

Production of capital goods fell 6% and that of non-durable consumer goods was down 1.8%. On the other hand, output in the energy sector increased 5.7%.

On a calendar adjusted basis, industrial production was up 0.5%.

Region-wise, industrial production recorded steep declines in the Balearic Islands and Madrid. Asturias recorded the fastest rate of positive growth.
