Al-Shabaab Suicide-Bomber Attacks Ethiopian Military Base In Somalia

Islamist militant group al-Shabaab carried out a suicide bomb attack on an Ethiopian military base in central Somalia on Tuesday morning.

A suicide bomber blew himself up as security guards shot at him to prevent him from advancing on an explosives-laden truck to the base gate in Beledweyne, reports said.

Al-Shabab claimed that ten Ethiopian soldiers were killed in the attack in the large town about 30 kilometers from the Ethiopian border, which the Ethiopian forces seized from the al-Qaeda linked terrorist outfit last month. Their claim has not been confirmed.

Situated on the major artery linking the north and south of the country, Beledweyne is a vital trade lifeline for rebels who are under attack by Somali forces as well as Armies from neighboring countries in Somalia's south and in the capital Mogadishu.

The dreaded militants have intensified mass killings in the country, which is already reeling under severe drought and famine.
