Cate Blanchett has reportedly signed on to appear in a big screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novella "Carol (aka The Price of Salt)." Blanchett will join Mia Wasikowska in the film, which will be directed by John Crowley and produced by Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen from Number 9 Films.

The film tells the tale of two women who develop a complex relationship while living in 1950's New York City.

Karlsen and Woolley released an official statement on the project saying they are "thrilled to be working with Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska . . . two of the most talented actors working today."

Film4 chief Tessa Ross said: "Carol is a beautiful and heart-breaking story and it's a testament to the talents of Phyllis and John that we've attracted actresses of Cate and Mia's calibre to star at the heart of it."
