Rare Beatles Image Sells For £16,000

A rare image of the Beatles walking the opposite way across the famed Abbey Road "zebra crossing" has sold for £16,000. The image was captured by photographer Ian Macmillan during the shoot that produced the cover to the legendary 1969 album.

In the image, the band is seen coming back across the intersection from right to left, unlike the final album cover which shows them crossing left to right. And unlike the final cover, Paul McCartney is wearing sandals and not in bare feet. He also has no cigarette in his hand.

"Macmillan had 10 minutes to do the shoot and he took six photographs of the Beatles walking backwards and forwards across the zebra crossing. He was standing up a ladder to take the pictures . . . I think the reason it became so popular is its simplicity . . ." a rep for Bloomsbury Auctions told the Guardian.
