"The Great Gatsby," December 25th (Warner Bros.):
If you're looking to get away from Leonardo DiCaprio at the multiplex this holiday season, good luck.
Not only is DiCaprio starring in Quentin Tarantino's highly buzzed about historical piece "Django Unchained" but he's also the centerpiece of director Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel "The Great Gatsby."
DiCaprio stars are Jay Gatsby, a polished and highly successful socialite who gets caught up in a lavish lifestyle that brings him to the brink of falling apart.
But if you were expecting a stuffy adaptation of Fitzgerald's most acclaimed work, think again, as Luhrmann brings his surreal style of filmmaking to fill the trailer with over-the-top romance and dazzling photography.
"Gatsby" also co-stars Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher, though the trailer makes no mistake about this being a star vehicle for DiCaprio.
Luhrmann, who gained acclaim for his version of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge," seems to be a good fit for the material and hopefully audiences can forget about his critically shredded "Australia," which threatened to derail a promising career.
Though "The Great Gatsby" trailer showcases the fun, fast-paced style that Luhrmann is noted for, we'll see if he's made a film that can satisfy lovers of the novel.
The trailer for "The Great Gatsby" can be viewed at the movie's official site.
Box office outlook:
Though "Australia" was mostly a dud in the U.S., reuniting with DiCaprio should help get "The Great Gatsby" off the ground, even if mainstream audiences don't completely buy into Luhrmann's gushing romanticism.
Domestic expectations for "Gatsby" should be tempered, but Luhrmann does have a strong following in foreign markets, giving the film plenty of worldwide potential as it hits theaters on Christmas Day.
