Gainers:
Citigroup, Inc. (C) is rising more than 1 percent to $35.33. The company's third quarter profit plunged from the year-ago period. However, the company's third quarter earnings, excluding CVA/DVA, the loss on Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and the tax benefit, improved 26 percent from the year-ago period.
Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) is rising 3 percent to $5.90. Softbank Corp. (SFTBY.PK) agreed to acquire 70 percent stake in the company for about $20.1 billion or nearly 1.57 trillion yen. In a separate announcement, in view of this acquisition, Moody's is considering a review of Softbank for a possible downgrade.
Clearwire Corp. (CLWR) is rising 11 percent to $2.58.
Aegerion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AEGR) is up nearly 13 percent to $18.
Decliners:
CONSOL Energy Inc. (CNX) is falling 4 percent to $33.75. The company expects to report a net loss for the third quarter, due to a combination of marketing and operational issues.
Trading halt:
Trading in shares of China Shengda Packaging Group Inc. (CPGI) was halted. The company announced that it has received a preliminary, non-binding proposal from its Chairman, Nengbin Fang at a proposed price of $1.40 per share to be paid in cash.
Trading in shares of Yongye International, Inc. (YONG) was halted. The company announced the receipt of a going pivate proposal at $6.60 per share.
