Verizon Wireless To Add Google Play Apps Payment To Phone Bill

Google, Inc. (GOOG) confirmed Friday that Verizon Communications,Inc.'s (VZ) wireless customers will also soon be able to pay for Google Play Store apps and other media through their monthly phone bills. The carrier will start offering the service over the next few weeks, according to a tweet on Google Play Store's Twitter account on Thursday.

The service, for the convenience of Android users, will allow Verizon Wireless customers to purchase favorite music, books, magazines, movies, TV shows, apps, and games, with the charges being paid along with their phone bill.

Google Play will introduce a new payment option, "Bill my Verizon Wireless account", for Android users shopping on the Google Play Store site.

The Android operating platform is currently the world's most used operating system in smartphones. Major smartphone makers like Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericcsson and Motorola, all use Google's Android platform.

Google now aims to take advantage of this wide use of its smartphone software and its giant share in Internet search to improve its revenues and market share in the digital media market.

Verizon will be the last U.S. carrier to offer the service, five months late. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), AT&T, Inc., and T-Mobile have been offering the service to their customers for since May. However, Verizon reportedly said they will cap the Google Play charges to be added to a bill at $25 per phone number per month.

Google combined in early March Android Market app, Google Music and the Google eBookstore into a single brand to be named as Google Play.

GOOG closed Friday's regular trading session at $681.79, down $13.21 or 1.90% on a volume of 11.48 million shares.
