Exercising 10 minutes a day can boost life expectancy by nearly two years, according to researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, who published their results in the journal PLoS Medicine on Tuesday (November 6).

Researchers surveyed data on 650,000 women and men (aged 40 plus) to determine that an active lifestyle is correlated with a healthy lifestyle:

"More leisure-time physical activity was associated with longer life expectancy across a range of activity levels and body mass index groups," said the researchers.

The authors added that inactive obese participants had a life expectancy between five to seven years shorter than people with normal weight who were moderately active.

"These findings reinforce the public health message that both a physically active lifestyle and a normal body weight are important for increasing longevity."

The World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly, associating it with an increased life span of 3.5-4.5 years.
