AcelRx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ACRX) Meets Primary Endpoint In Phase 3 Non-Inferiority Study Of Sublingual Sufentanil NanoTab PCA System
AcelRx said it met the primary endpoint in a late stage comparative study involving its Sufentanil NanoTab PCA System. Top-line results of the Phase 3 clinical trial demonstrate that the Sufentanil NanoTab PCA System was non-inferior to Standard of care IV PCA morphine.
The results are derived a phase III study comparing the efficacy and safety of the company's lead product candidate ARX-01 to the standard of care IV PCA morphine in treating acute post-operative pain that occurs immediately after major abdominal or orthopedic surgery.
Patients were randomized 1:1 to treatment with the NanoTab System or IV PCA morphine and were treated for post-operative pain for a minimum of 48 hours and up to 72 hours.
Intravenous patient-controlled analgesia or I.V. PCA is the standard of care in many hospitals for the management of acute postoperative pain. The most commonly used opioid drug for I.V. PCA is Morphine. Although widely used, I.V. PCA is said to have a number of drawbacks because of the side effects of Morphine, the invasive IV route of delivery and the inherent potential for programming and delivery errors associated with the complexity of infusion pumps.
Unlike the standard I.V. PCA, which uses Morphine, ARX-01 utilizes Sufentanil, a high therapeutic index opioid, NanoTabs, a proprietary, non-invasive sublingual dosage form, and a novel hand-held PCA system.
