Imagine a smart phone that is as thin as a coin. Japan Display, a Japanese company, recently introduced the world to shocking new designs for their displays.
The devices measure an unbelievable 1mm to 1.5mm in thickness. According to DigiInfo TV, the company announced three versions: a 5-inch Full HD, 438ppi smartphone display; a 7-inch, 2560x1600 pixel WQXGA 431ppi tablet display; and a 12.2-inch, 1,920 x 720 car display. So how do they pack all this technology into devices that are just a tad bit thicker than your office paper? The device's hardware, instead of being attached from outside, is built into the touch panel itself.
Japan Display is the result of an agreement between Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, after the three companies signed an agreement with the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) to integrate their small- and medium-sized display businesses. While INCJ owns 70 percent of the semi-public company, the three electronic giants own 10 percent each.
The new designs are likely to send tremors down the spines of the folks at Cupertino, whose ultra sleek iPhone 5 is much bulkier at 7.6mm.
The screens will be mass produced next year or so and could hog the limelight in the display market space.
