Record High Govt. Welfare Seekers In Japan

The number of Japanese living on government welfare has hit a new record in six months in a row with the population of such people rising to 2.14 million.

Quoting the Welfare Ministry, Japanese media reported on Monday that the figure exceeded the previous high set one month before by 8,600.

The number of welfare-recipient households rose by 6,700 to 1.56 million -- also an all-time high. Elderly households account for 43 percent of the total, followed by households with the sick or injured at 19 percent, the report said.
