Danish Trade Surplus Falls To 4-Year Low, Current Account Surplus Drops

Denmark's merchandise trade surplus plunged to the lowest level in four years in December as shipments declined further and imports increased, data from Statistics Denmark showed Friday.

The seasonally adjusted trade surplus, excluding ships and aircraft, fell to DKK3.5 billion in December from DKK7.7 billion in November, hitting the lowest level since December 2008.

Export of goods fell 3.8 percent annually to DKK49.7 million in December. Imports, meanwhile, increased by 5.3 percent to DKK46.2 billion.

In the fourth quarter, exports declined by 1 percent from a year earlier, while imports increased 2.2 percent.

Separately, the agency said Denmark's current account surplus declined sharply to DKK5.1 billion in December from DKK7.8 billion a year earlier. November, the balance was a surplus of DKK10.7 billion.

The goods trade account turned to a deficit of DKK2.3 billion in December from a surplus of DKK5.5 billion in November. The surplus in the services account, meanwhile, rose to DKK4.4 billion from DKK3.1 billion.
