Teacher Arrested After Teen's Drug Overdose

A Barrow County teacher was arrested after the teenager she allegedly supplied drugs too was found dead the next day, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Emily Smith, a sixth-grade math teacher at Winder Barrow Middle School, is accused of selling methadone, a synthetic opiate, and Xanax to an 18-year-old on Feb. 13, according to Channel 2 Action News via the AJC.

The girl, whom Smith considered a friend, was found deceased in her home the following night, according to the article.

"Ms. Smith conspired with the victim by cellphone in reference to obtaining a controlled substance prior to her death," Captain Faye Spaulding of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office told Channel 2 via the AJC.

Toxicology reports indicated there were high levels of controlled substances in the teenager's system, but the cause of death is still not determined, according to Spaulding.

"We are not sure how or why she was trying to obtain the controlled substance for the teenager," the captain said in the AJC article.
