Retail sales in Hungary continued to drop in February, but the rate of decline was weaker than forecast by economists, data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office showed Thursday.

Sales fell 1.4 percent year-on-year in February following a 2.6 percent drop in January. Sales have been falling steadily since March last year. Economists had forecast a 2 percent decrease in retail trade.

The latest decline mainly resulted from a 2.6 percent annual drop in sales of food, drinks and tobacco as well as of a 4 percent slump in automotive fuel.

Retail sales of non-food articles fell marginally by 0.3 percent year-on-year in February, data showed.
