Japan's Consumer Confidence Improves For Third Month

Japan's consumer sentiment improved for the third successive month in March, data released by the Cabinet Office showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index, excluding one-person households, increased to 44.8 in March from 44.2 in February. In January, the reading was 43.2. The index increased for the third month in a row.

Households' views of their overall livelihood was broadly stable during the month, with the relevant sub-index staying unchanged at 43. Consumers' expectations for income growth was also unchanged from the previous month.

Japanese households were slightly more optimistic about the employment situation in the country. At the same time, their intention to buy durable goods was more upbeat than in the previous month.

On an unadjusted basis, the consumer confidence index was at 45 in March, lower than 44.2 recoded a month earlier. The survey was conducted on March 15, and covered 6,720 households.
