Mars One, a Dutch company, is looking for volunteer astronauts to fly to Mars where they will live out the remainder of their lives. While on the planet, reports CNN, the settlers will attempt to establish life there.
The project has already pulled in 10,000 applicants, and hopes to pull in more when it makes its official announcement on Monday at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. There is an application fee, which will go toward funding the mission.
According to Bas Lansdorp, the astronauts will lose muscle and bone mass during the seven-month journey. Once they adjust to Mars gravity, it will be impossible to readjust to Earth's gravity, he added. The launch is expected to go down in 2023.
Eventually, the company wants to build a colony on the planet, gradually building up a larger population.
The company says on its website that it hopes to raise funds for the project by selling broadcasting rights.
"Not unlike the televised events of the Olympic Games, Mars One intends to maintain an on-going, global media event, from astronaut selection to training, from lift-off to landing," the site said.
