Spanish banking products provider Banco Santander, S.A. (SAN,BNC.L) said it agreed to appoint Javier Marín Romano as chief executive officer, after Alfredo Sáenz Abad, on April 29, informed the board of his voluntary resignation as vice chairman and chief executive officer. He is also leaving the board.
Marín, currently senior executive vice president of the bank and head of the global insurance, asset management and private banking division, joined the Group in 1991.
The outgoing CEO Sáenz joined Grupo Santander in 1994, when it acquired Banesto through an auction. He was executive chairman of the unit until 2002, when he was named vice chairman and chief executive of Banco Santander.
Banco Santander also announced its decision to name Matías Rodríguez Inciarte second vice chairman. Matías Rodríguez Inciarte is head of risk management of the Group and chairman of the board's Risk Committee.
