Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison for tax evasion. The former Fugees star paid $970,000 of her $1,000,000 tax debt but will still have to serve time, according to the New York Daily News.
Just before her sentencing, Hill blamed the music business and slavery for her tax troubles.
"I was put into a system I didn't know the nature of," she said. "I'm a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me. I sold 50 million units . . . now I'm up here paying a tax debt. If that's not likened to slavery, I don't know what is."
According to documents filed in the case, during 2005, 2006 and 2007, Hill earned over $1.8 million in income but failed to file tax returns for those years.
In addition to her three-month prison sentence, Hill will serve one year of probation and three months of house arrest.
