Blur bassist Alex James has made his directing debut with a short film called Life Is Short.

James also stars in the short film, shot in Los Angeles while he was visiting California for the Coachella Festival last month. The two-and-a-half minute film features a brand new solo track called "Superordinator."

"Like everything else, it starts with an idea and as music is so much part of my life, it quickly became the focus of the short," James told NME of the film.

"I decided to make a film about being carefree and happy, with a punchline that brings it all back to earth - the concept being life is short, but music endures. I really enjoyed the whole filmmaking process, it was very accessible and a lot of fun."

Life Is Short was made to help launch Virgin Media Shorts, a competition that gives undiscovered British filmmaking talent an opportunity to have their work shown in cinemas, on TV and online.
