Even with a very strong $51 million opening from "The Great Gatsby," "Iron Man 3" had no problem once again landing atop the box office charts, earning $72 million in its second weekend to push its 10-day domestic total to a staggering $284 million. But as "Gatsby" and "Iron Man 3" posted big weekend figures, "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" completely tanked and finished with just $4.85 million in opening revenue, making it far and away Perry's biggest box office dud to date. Art house thriller "Mud" also squeezed back into the top 10, though a modest $2.2 million weekend suggests that it doesn't have much sway with its intended adult audience.
After "Australia" was a major box office bust in the U.S. back in 2008, director Baz Luhrmann is back with his biggest hit ever, as "The Great Gatsby" got off to a stellar start with its target audience over the weekend. Earning more than $14,000 per site, "Gatsby" overcame mixed critical reviews and is clearly resonating with mainstream crowds, putting it on pace to shoot well past $100 million in the U.S. by the end of the month.
Thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio's worldwide popularity, "Gatsby" also stands a very good chance of putting up some big numbers outside of the U.S. Though "Gatsby" may struggle to compete with some of the other big-budget releases hitting theaters over the next few weekends, distributor Warner Brothers has to be very encouraged with the box office outlook.
While "Gatsby" got off to a great start, "Iron Man 3" continues to be a force to be reckoned with at the box office all over the world. With a chart-topping weekend of $72 million in the U.S., "Iron Man 3" is now up to an unbelievable $949 million worldwide to make it far and away the top grossing movie of 2013 so far. Currently, "The Croods" is the only other 2013 release to make it to $500 million worldwide, as even "Oz The Great and Powerful" struggled to reach international expectations in theaters. Next weekend, "Iron Man 3" will give up its position at the top of the charts to "Star Trek Into Darkness," but it stands a great chance to remain the top grossing movie of 2013.
Aiming at a mostly different crowd over the weekend was "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples," though the comedy starring Craig Robinson misfired with its target audience and made just $4.85 million at 2,041 theaters. While producer Perry has routinely seen strong opening numbers over the last five years, "Peeples" is easily a new low, as Perry had never previously produced a movie that earned less than $15 million in its first weekend in theaters. With no audience buzz and rough critical reviews, "Peeples" should drop very quickly at the box office over the next couple of weeks.
As "Peeples" bombed with its intended audience, it should also be the last weekend that Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" has much of an impact in theaters. "Pain & Gain" has racked up just $41.61 million in the U.S. at the close of its third weekend - a so-so total even for a movie that cost just $26 million to produce. With "Star Trek Into Darkness" taking over with action audiences over the next couple of weeks, "Pain & Gain" should see a dramatic drop in audience interest.
Next weekend, "Star Trek Into Darkness" hits theaters with big expectations from distributor Paramount as the summer box office season continues. Though the numbers for the 2009 "Star Trek" were far from groundbreaking, excellent audience and critical buzz could turn "Into Darkness" into a mega commercial hit both domestically and abroad. Also hitting theaters the rest of May will be Fox's big-budgeted animated film "Epic," "The Hangover III" and M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi epic "After Earth," starring Will and Jaden Smith.
