Italy's inflation, as measured by the harmonized index of consumer prices, eased in April, final data released by statistical office Istat confirmed Tuesday.

The HICP rose 1.3 percent year-on-year in April, slower than a 1.8 percent increase in March. This matched the preliminary estimates.

Inflation, based on the consumer price index, eased to 1.1 percent in April from 1.6 percent in March. The April CPI inflation rate was originally estimated at 1.2 percent.

According to the statistical office, the sharp slowdown in inflation was mainly due to lower energy costs. Energy prices fell 2.1 percent from March and decreased 0.9 percent year on year.

On a monthly basis, HICP rose 0.3 percent but the CPI showed no movement.
