DirecTV (DTV) is mulling a bid for video site Hulu, the Wall Street Journal said, quoting a person familiar with the matter.

Hulu's owners, including Walt Disney Co. (DIS), News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), are exploring strategic options for the digital entertainment site including its sale.

Firms such as cable operator Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) Guggenheim Partners, Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) and former News Corp. president Peter Chernin's investment group are also said to be interested in Hulu.

DirectTV could be interested in Hulu as it would help expand its "TV Everywhere" services, which make TV shows available over the internet to pay TV customers.

It is not clear whether DirectTV is interested in buying the whole of the six-year-old site or part of it.

DTV closed up 0.8 percent on Friday at $65.21.
