The defense attorneys for convicted murderer Jodi Arias on Monday saw their request for a mistrial denied by Judge Sherry Stephens.

As a result, the defense lawyers tried to withdraw from the case - but the judge would not allow that either.

Arias was found by the jury to have acted with extreme cruelty when she killed ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander five years ago.

Arias is expected to address the jury on Tuesday before it withdraws to deliberate on whether she should receive the death penalty or life in prison.

Arias said that she acted in self-defense when she shot Alexander on June 4, 2008. Alexander's body also had a slit throat and 27 stab wounds, although Arias testified that she blacked out after shooting Alexander and had no memory of stabbing him.
