Thirteen people have been killed and 20 reported missing after a blast at an explosives factory in China's eastern Shandong province, state media reported on Tuesday.

Nearly 20 people were also injured in Monday's explosion at the three-storey plant of the state-owned Poly Explosives (Jinan), the Xinhua news agency said.

Rescue workers continued search for the missing on Tuesday clearing the debris. Police were carrying out DNA identification to determine the number of casualties, Xinhua quoted Jinan Municipal Public Security Bureau chief Liu Xinyun as saying.

The plant was a new one with an annual output of at least 30,000 tons of dynamite, the report said.

Workplace accidents are common in China whose industrial safety record is poor.
