A man from Wisconsin has been sentenced to jail and probation after stealing a shopping basket filled with baby formula and then trading it for heroin.

Local newspaper, The Journal Times, reports that Michael R. Bortmann, 52, was sentenced to nine months in Racine County Jail and three years of probation for stuffing a grocery basket with baby formula at a local grocery store and then fleeing in his vehicle, almost running over a store clerk that had tried to stop him.

The incident occurred back in February at a Caledonia Pick 'n Save grocery store. When authorities later arrested Bortmann, they found heroin in his possession instead of the baby formula. Bortmann told authorities that he traded the formula for heroin and that he injected it roughly an hour before being arrested by the police.

In March, Bortmann pleaded guilty to misdemeanor retail theft and a drug possession charge. In addition to his sentencing, Bortmann was told to repay Pick 'n Save, pay court costs and to have no future contact with Pick 'n Save.
