Switzerland's trade surplus decreased from the previous month in April, defying economists' forecast for an increase, latest data showed Tuesday.
The merchandise trade surplus declined to CHF 1.73 billion in April from CHF 1.89 billion in March, the Federal Customs Administration said. The balance was lower than the CHF 2.05 billion surplus economists had forecast.
Export of goods, on a nominal basis, edged up a working-day adjusted 0.5 percent year-on-year in April to CHF 17 billion. At constant prices, shipments advanced 6.9 percent from April 2012.
Imports, meanwhile, decreased by 1.5 percent annually to CHF 15.28 billion during the month. Adjusted for price variations, external purchases were higher by 7.1 percent than year earlier.
In the January-April period, in real terms, exports and imports decreased 1.2 percent and 3.5 percent respectively from the corresponding period a year earlier. The net trade for the four-month period resulted in a surplus of CHF 7.72 billion.
