With $96 million over the three-day weekend and more than $120 million including Memorial Day, "Fast & Furious 6" is off and running following one of the busiest weekends of all-time. In an extended weekend that saw four movies earn at least $40 million, "The Hangover III" crossed $50 million, while "Star Trek Into Darkness" hauled in $47 million and animated release "Epic" racked up $42 million. "Iron Man 3" and "The Great Gatsby" also cashed in on the busy weekend, boosting their impressive domestic totals by $24 million and $17 million, respectively.

If there was ever any doubt about how big the "Fast & Furious" franchise is, those doubts have been cast aside by an enormous opening weekend both domestically and abroad. Including Memorial Day, "Fast & Furious 6" hauled in a spectacular $32,800 per venue, which was more than enough to finish as the number one movie of the weekend. With a production budget of $160 million, expectations were obviously huge, but a quick $120 million in domestic revenue makes "Fast & Furious 6" look like a clear home run for distributor Universal.

But it isn't just American audiences that have bought into the Vin Diesel-starring action franchise, as numbers outside of the U.S. were also very strong over the weekend. "Fast & Furious 6" brought in nearly $200 million in foreign revenue as well, shooting it past $300 million worldwide in less than a week in theaters. Even with some heavy competition for action audiences over the next few weeks, expect "Fast & Furious 6" to keep putting up strong numbers for the immediate future, setting the stage for the seventh installment to hit theaters next July.

Also appealing to plenty of moviegoers over the weekend was "The Hangover III," which scored a steady $41 million opening for the three-day weekend and $51 million including Memorial Day. Adding in the numbers from its Thursday opening and "The Hangover III" is already up to $63 million domestically, putting in a good position to meet high expectations from Warner Brothers. Though it's unlikely that it will come close to the totals of the first two in the franchise, which both crossed $250 million in the U.S. and $450 million worldwide, "The Hangover III" should continue posting strong numbers and end up as one of the top grossing R-rated comedies of the year.

Also hitting theaters over the weekend was "Epic," an animated film from distributor Fox that carries a robust $100 million price tag. Though early domestic numbers were a little low for such an enormous production, "Epic" is up to $85 million around the globe already and it is the only major family draw for the next few weeks, likely leading to a solid overall box office run.

While the newcomers put up some big overall numbers, it was also a good weekend for "Star Trek Into Darkness," "Iron Man 3" and "The Great Gatsby." With $47 million over the long weekend, "Into Darkness" is now up to $155 million in the U.S. and $257 million around the globe, giving it a respectable total so far for the $190 million Paramount production. "Iron Man 3," meanwhile, has now earned $372 million domestically and is well past $1 billion worldwide, making it the favorite to finish the year as the top grossing release. "The Great Gatsby" also continued its success over the holiday weekend, pushing it to $117 million in the U.S. and $203 million worldwide.

Next weekend, big-budget season will continue with the release of "After Earth," a sci-fi epic starring Will and Jaden Smith from director M. Night Shyamalan. "Now You See Me" will also hit theaters next weekend, with Jesse Eisenberg and Morgan Freeman starring in a thriller about FBI agents chasing a team of ingenious bank robbers.
