Three militants were killed and three others arrested during a joint operation by Afghan and coalition forces in search of a senior Taliban leader in Archi district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Thursday.

The senior leader is responsible for fabricating IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and suicide vests for use in insurgent operations. He has also directed and coordinated attacks in Archi district resulting in the deaths of numerous Afghan National Security Force personnel.

During the operation, a group of insurgents opened fire on the security forces who returned fire, killing three fighters, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a press release.

Security forces also arrested three insurgents and seized two AK-47s, one sub-machine gun, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher and eight rocket-propelled grenades in the operation.

Also on Thursday, Afghan-coalition forces arrested six insurgents during separate operations in search of a senior Haqqani leader in Pul-e 'Alam district, Logar province.

Separately, security forces killed one insurgent during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, on Wednesday, ISAF said in a Joint Command Operational Update.
