Hungary Retail Sales Increase Unexpectedly

Retail sales in Hungary rose unexpectedly in April, preliminary data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office showed Wednesday.

The volume of sales, based on calendar adjusted data, increased 3.4 percent year-on-year in April. Economists expected a 0.6 percent decline. This followed a 2.9 percent annual decline in March.

The volume of sales increased 3.3 percent at food, drinks and tobacco stores on an annual basis and rose 6.3 percent in automotive fuel retailing. There was no change in non-foods retail sales in April compared to the same month last year.
