Iran's president-elect Hassan Rouhani has said that his government will manage to have the sanctions imposed on the country eased by showing "more transparency" on its nuclear program and trying to "build confidence" with the world.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, his first since being elected Friday, Rouhani said his administration of "Prudence and Hope" will follow a "moderate" policy line in serving national objectives.

At the same time, Iran's former chief nuclear negotiator ruled out suspending the Islamist nation's uranium enrichment activities, which the world views with suspicion.

The moderate Shiite cleric expressed willingness to open talks with the United States on condition that the latter recognizes Iran's right to a nuclear program.

The statement signaled a change of Teheran's attitude towards Washington, which was characterized by frequent anti-US rhetoric by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that fueled tensions in Iran-US ties.

He called for corrective measures from both sides to "find solutions to past issues."

Rouhani said repairing Iran's economy, crippled by a series of sanctions, and engaging in "constructive interaction" within the country and with the world are his priorities.

The 65 year-old centrist, who won the election with a clear majority, will become the new President succeeding Ahmadinejad after Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei ratify the election outcome on August 3.
