A surprise attack by unidentified gunmen on a military weapons depot in Mozambique's central region has left at least five soldiers dead and two wounded, media reports citing unnamed military officials said on Monday.

The incident reportedly happened in the Dondo district of central Sofala province at around 4:00 p.m. local time. Local media reported that the assailants took away arms and ammunitions and fled the scene.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Mozambican officials are blaming the Renamo group, a former rebel movement which is now the country's main Opposition party. Nevertheless, Renamo is yet to respond to those allegations.

Incidentally, Renamo fighters had attacked a police station in the same region in April, killing at leas5t five policemen and three civilians. Mozambique's central Sofala region is a stronghold of the Opposition.

Renamo and the governing Frelimo party were on opposite sides in Mozambique's 16-year brutal civil war, which ended in 1992 with the signing of a peace deal. Nevertheless, Renamo continues to fight the Frelimo government, which has ruled the country since the end of the civil war, accusing it of not honoring its commitments under the peace deal.

Renamo recently threatened to boycott local elections in November unless the existing election laws are amended, insisting the country's current electoral process is flawed.

Although both Frelimo and Renamo have held at least six rounds of peace negotiations in recent years, they are yet to reach agreements on any of the major issues on the table. Notably, Monday's attack came on the same day that the two rival parties resumed their negotiations in capital Maputo.
